Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefit

A program available through Canada Pension Plan that provides a monthly taxable payment to people who have contributed to CPP but are no longer able to work regularly because of a severe and prolonged disability. Related benefits are also available for dependent children. Disability income provided from other sources such as private insurers or provincial/territorial programs may be reduced when payment of CPP disability benefits is initiated.

Provincial/Territorial Disability Income Assistance Programs

Programs at the provincial/territorial level that provide financial assistance for persons younger than age 65 who have disabilities that prevent them from working at any job on a regular basis. Most programs provide income support as well as vocational assessment, vocational rehabilitation, job training and other types of employment-related support that help people eventually prepare for and obtain suitable jobs. Once eligibility for the program has been established, recipients may be able to draw upon other programs that provide additional benefits, e.g., items such as assistive devices and medical equipment and supplies, or clothing allowances for dependent children.

Veteran Disability Pension

A program administered by Veterans Affairs Canada that provides regular monthly payments to compensate individuals who have service-related medical disabilities and who are either a Canadian Forces Veteran or a Merchant Navy Veteran of the First or Second World War or the Korean War; a current or former member of the Regular or Reserve Force; or a civilian who served in close support of the Armed Forces during wartime. Pension entitlement is based solely on the severity of the disability and the relationship between the disability and military service. Additional monthly allowances and attendance care allowances are provided to pensioners who are exceptionally incapacitated in whole or in part by their pensioned disability. When a disability pensioner dies, the surviving spouse may receive the same pension for a period of one year, after which a survivor's pension will automatically be paid. Applications can be made directly to Veterans Affairs or to a service officer of the Royal Canadian Legion or another veterans' organization.
