National Libraries
Libraries that are units of or affiliated with the federal government and which serve as copyright depositories for materials published in the country, compile and maintain a national bibliography, collect international materials for scholarly use, produce and distribute bibliographic tools such as subject headings listings, develop and maintain standards for bibliographic practices, coordinate a network of libraries nationwide and/or provide reference and other library services for federal employees.
Public Libraries
Libraries supported by public and/or private funds which provide general library services without charge to all residents of a given community, district or region.
Special Libraries
Public or private libraries that are devoted to acquiring, classifying and making available to the community for research or general appreciation, books, manuscripts, letters and other documents or artistic materials that are rare, of special interest, of historical significance or of scholarly value. Also included are libraries whose collections specialize in materials that are related to a particular focus or target group, e.g., political thought, minority groups, gay or lesbian groups, religious groups, women.
