Description (Service)

Manages financial and/or personal affairs of persons who are mentally incapable where no one else is able to do so

  • acts as Substitute Decision Maker (SDM) of last resort to make medical treatment and long term care admission decisions for persons who are deemed mentally incapable
  • makes financial decisions for people who have been found mentally incapable
  • investigates allegations regarding people who are or may be incapable, and are at risk of suffering serious financial or personal harm
  • administers certain estates of Ontario residents who die without a will (or the executor of the will has died or become incapable) and without any eligible person to administer the estate
  • as the Accountant of the Superior Court of Justice, retains all money, mortgages and securities paid into, or lodged with, the Court on behalf of minors, and litigants (plaintiffs and defendants)
  • protects the public interest in charitable property and dissolved corporations; deals with forfeited property
  • invests perpetual care funds of some cemeteries
